Services have to work for everyone, be accountable for every decision, and survive long procurement and longer lifespans.
The problem
A public service cannot choose its users. It has to be accessible, auditable and maintainable by whoever inherits it, which rules out most of the shortcuts a commercial product can take.
How we would approach it
We would build to WCAG as a requirement rather than a late audit, keep an audit trail of every decision the system makes, and document for the team that takes it over. Privacy-first design, role-based access scoped to limit blast radius, and human review queues behind any automated decision are how we build anyway.
